Founded 100 years ago in Weimar, the Bauhaus’s influence on architecture, art, design and educational science can still be felt today. 100 years ago, the question of people’s role in the mechanical age was tackled on the Bauhaus stage in both artistic and experimental terms.
has taken up the theme, exploring the question of the role of people in the digital age in the form of a virtual reality dance experience, inspired by the stage experiments of Oskar Schlemmer and Walter Gropius, with choreography by Richard Siegal.
The interplay between dance, music and sound design, costume design and scenography with algorithms and digital technology brings the story to life across three levels: Together with a "Tanzmaschine", users pass through a dance choreography, always accompanied by the question of the extent of the scope of their influence on the surrounding space and the machine.
Four people simultaneously immerse themselves into the world of Das Totale Tanz Theater, always with sight of the other respective users and of their virtual stage platforms and dance performances. They are standing, enclosed by a semi-transparent gauze ring, upon which projections of the dance machines connect the happenings in the virtual world with the real world.
The single-user experience conveys the interactive experience – scalable and flexible in terms of space. In this case too, projections link the virtual world to the real world.
With music by Einstürzende Neubauten and choreography by Richard Siegal, embedded into Das Totale Tanz Theater’s stage world, the 360° video can be experienced best in revolving chairs.
Phenomenal stage construction, costumes whose sheer beauty unfolds as they move,
constantly evolving choreography over three levels, and music and sound design which underscore the
story’s dramaturgy. The ‘making of’ offers insights into how Das Totale Tanz Theater was created.
Das Totale Tanz Theater debuted as part of
the official opening festival commemorating the Bauhaus’s anniversary, held at the Academy of
Arts Berlin, Hanseatenweg. A 6m-diameter ring covered with semi-transparent gauze encloses the
four users in the multi-user installation. Projections of the dance machines from inside Das Totale Tanz Theater connect the virtual world to the real
world, making the dance machines accessible to the spectators outside the ring.
A projection
that shows the dance machines ‘behind the scenes’ gets the visitors in the mood, and leads them
to the installation.
